DLT Registration, Headers and SMS Templates: An India Guide

A business-friendly overview of entity registration, headers, content templates, consent requirements, telemarketer relationships and pre-launch checks.

Direct answer

The short answer.

For compliant business SMS in India, the sending entity generally needs the applicable DLT registration, approved sender header, approved content template and correctly mapped telemarketer or delivery chain. Promotional or consent-based journeys can require additional consent-template and customer-preference controls. Exact requirements depend on the message purpose and current TRAI and access-provider directions.

Key takeaways

Four points to carry into the next decision.

01Classify the use case correctly before selecting a header or template category.
02Keep brand, legal entity and sample-message information consistent.
03Map the approved template and authorised delivery chain before sending traffic.
04Treat consent records and opt-out handling as operational evidence, not paperwork.

What the DLT framework is designed to control

India’s commercial-communication framework aims to make business messaging traceable and to protect customer preferences. DLT platforms used by access providers support registration and mapping of senders, headers, templates, consent and telemarketer relationships under the applicable telecom rules.

This guide is an operational overview, not legal advice. TRAI regulations and directions can change, and access-provider workflows may differ. Always check the current portal requirements and consolidated regulations for the message category being planned.

1. Register the principal entity accurately

The principal entity is the organisation on whose behalf the communication is sent. Use accurate legal and business information and submit the documents requested by the selected access-provider DLT portal.

Names, identifiers, domains and authorised contacts should be consistent. Variations across the business registration, website and campaign content can create review questions or make later mapping difficult.

2. Select and register the correct sender header

A sender header identifies the message origin displayed to the recipient. The header type and format must match the communication category and the access-provider process.

Choose a recognisable brand-aligned header where available, but do not assume every requested combination will be approved. Record the approved header ID and category for the delivery team.

3. Register content templates carefully

The submitted template should match the actual message, including the fixed text, variables, brand reference and required links or contact details. Use variables only where the content genuinely changes and provide clear samples when requested.

Small punctuation, spacing, URL or variable differences can affect matching. Production teams should send from the approved version rather than recreating copy manually at launch time.

5. Run a pre-launch compliance check

Before volume traffic, send controlled tests and verify the approved identifiers, message rendering, variable placement, delivery route, opt-out process and reporting.

  • Entity and portal status active
  • Header approved for the intended category
  • Content and consent templates approved where applicable
  • Telemarketer and delivery chain correctly mapped
  • Customer preference and consent filters applied
  • Test message matches the registered template
DLT approval is not a one-time substitute for lawful data, accurate content, current consent and responsible campaign operation.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers before you begin.

What is DLT registration for business SMS?

It is the applicable sender-registration and traceability process used within India’s commercial-communication framework for entities, headers, templates, consent and telemarketer relationships.

What is the difference between a DLT header and content template?

The header identifies the sender shown to the recipient, while the content template defines the approved structure and wording of the message.

Does one approved template cover every SMS message?

No. The production message must match the applicable approved template and category. Different journeys or materially different wording can require separate templates.

Does DLT registration remove the need for customer consent?

No. Registration does not replace applicable consent, customer-preference, lawful-data, content and opt-out responsibilities.
